Lake or Ocean? Who Cares!

There is a lot of water in Seattle and I'm not talking about the rain.  I'm talking about bodies of water all over the place.  I never know if I'm looking at a huge lake or an ocean inlet.  To add to my confusion we checked out the Ballard locks.  It's where fresh water meets sea water.  About a 100 years ago some guy came up with a passage way for the boats to sail from one to the other even though the water is at different levels.  I was confused until I saw it for myself.

Here's the lock or passage way thingy, all lonely and empty

Here are a couple boats inside the lock/passage way thingy

Here are the boats, inside the lock, being lowered with the water level so they can sail away
Just don't ask me if they were sailing to or from the ocean.  I never figured that part out.  Next time I'll have to actually read all those boring displays at the visitors center.

But isn't it exciting?!  I know I could barely contain myself.  It just goes to show you that as long as you're outside on a sunny day you'll have fun no matter what you do around here.  Did I mention it's free?  It is.
