And then there were FOUR

I was sitting on a pink plastic couch in a waiting room at a Japanese hospital in the fall of 2008.  The TV was showing Japanese soap operas which were even worse than the American ones so I had nothing to do but sit and think.  What was I doing here?  Part of me wanted to leave but a bigger part of me knew I should stay.  Maybe this doctor could help me have the baby I'd been waiting and waiting and waiting for.  Maybe he could figure out what part of me was broken and fix it.
So I met with the only doctor on the island who treated infertility.  He was an American who loved Japan so much he decided to stay there.  Luckily he still remembered how to speak English, although he didn't do much speaking.  I was never really sure what his plan was but after a couple tests and one treatment later, the miracle occurred and I was pregnant.
This happened the same day my mom was diagnosed with her death sentence of terminal cancer.  At first I thought the timing of these events was merely a coincidence, but now I realize the pregnancy was compensation for the future loss of my mother because my body really was broken.
Fast forward a few years later and I found myself sitting in another waiting room, this time in Washington waiting to see a doctor who came highly recommended.  We talked extensively and came up with a plan.   I underwent all kinds of tests and went to countless and rarely convenient appointments (1-3 times a week) for several months.  What I had hoped would be a quick fix was stretching into months of waiting for results which were always negative.  Finally it came down to the last procedure and then we were calling it quits.  We even pulled out the big guns and I began giving myself hormone shots in the stomach to increase our chance of success.  At this point I was so exhausted from endless trips to the doctor, farming my kids out to be babysat, and living in a constant state of uncertainty, that I didn't care what the results were.  I was ready to be done.  After my last appointment I made a cake and we celebrated the end of fertility treatments.
Two weeks later we found out I was pregnant.  I cried when I heard the news then texted Randy, the only way to communicate with him during the day.  For those of you who didn't receive/read our Christmas card, the baby is due in August.  We are also scheduled to move to Italy in August and just found out that the necessary documents and visa for the baby won't be completed until mid to late October.
So it looks like poor Randy will be going to Italy by himself while I move to Utah, enroll the boys in school for a couple months and wait for a visa.
Obviously God has a sense of humor.  I'm sure in about twenty years I'll laugh at this whole experience.  Maybe.
If I survive it.

  3. Melanie I hope they can do the paperwork sooner. I got told a bunch of different things getting the paperwork to move to Japan with newborn Ollie and leaving when Scott was deployed just after Eliza was born. I will pray that it works out sooner for you. You know the drill, keep bugging people! So happy for you. I am already getting scared of the laundry for four!

  4. We're so excited for you guys! Maybe you could move to Italy ahead of time (without Randy) and just deliver in a foreign country. I'm joking, but if anyone could do it, you could.
