I'm a sucker for free fun so when I saw Home Depot was offering one of their free clinics for kids I knew we had to go. Randy had a list a mile long of things he needed at Home Depot (because we're home owners now and apparently Saturdays are for fixing up and repairing things) so the boys and I tagged along.
The clinic was epic. The kids got to build firetrucks and to make things even more fun there was a real firetruck and and ambulance there for the kids to sit in. An old man in an orange apron was passing out bags of popcorn and we were even given paint so we could paint the trucks after they were assembled.
And this is when I toot my own horn. Let's just say I got my mom on and handled four kids along with the assembling and painting of three trucks without any mishaps. No one smashed their finger (or mine) with the hammer, no one spilled paint or popcorn, and no one temper tantrum-ed. All this was done with Parker sleeping comfortably in the sling on my stomach. I got plenty of wide-eyed stares from other parents who were helping their one child but I showed them a thing or two as I helped the boys hammer, glue, and paint, like we were Santa's elves with a deadline.
We even got done before Randy could finish his shopping.
But don't let my bragging fool you. This was an unexpected and rare experience. You should have seen the three-ring circus on our bench at church today. I'm sure every person in our congregation was wondering what could ever possess us to have four children. I wondered the same thing, which is why I had to remind myself that not every public outing with my children ends in embarrassment and shame.
You were the leader of the field trip.
ReplyDeleteOh, I sat by Iris Monson today at a meeting -- she's in your ward!
You're a great mom, Mel. Even the less than stellar moments will have you smiling someday. I still remember one specific fight between Marcus and (caused by) Andrew. I was absolutely mortified and was sure it was probably the end even after an apology, but you made it all okay like it was part of life. Honestly, that's what your blog is all about - living in the moment - both good and bad. Anyway, that was a "moment" for me. Wonderful memories on the hill. We miss you guys.
