Finished! Sort of.....

Last year I got together with a group of 20 girls. We each picked something memorable about Okinawa or the Japanese culture and designed a quilt square from it. I designed my square after the hibiscus flower. They are gorgeous and grow everywhere around here.
Here is one of my 20 completed quilt squares.

After everyone finished their 20 squares, we exchanged them. Some of the squares won't mean anything to you if you've never been to Okinawa but this quilt will always remind me of our Okinawan adventures.

(Starting from left to right: Japanese shoes, dragon fly, Kokeshi dolls, sanshin or guitar, purple sweet potato and goya, hibiscus, sushi, Shisa dog, SCUBA dive flag, American and Japanese flag, Japanese gate, Okinawa Island, kimono, pirate ship, Japanese car, drum, pineapple, Japanese house, baptism at the beach, and road signs)

  1. Looks great! I haven't seen one all finished yet--just the squares. Did you quilt it up yourself?

  2. I am sooooooo jealous that you have your part done. ! It looks so good. You did a great job. I can't wait to finish mine and get that off my chest. I will forever look at your beautiful hibiscus and remember the wonderful friend you've been to me here in Okinawa. I love it!

  3. Rub a little salt in the wound, why don't ya? :D I love it, Mel! The dark background really brings out the squares - each one unique and meaningful. I wish I had one with your name on it - that's the only thing mine will be missing. Maybe you could join us during the quilt-ins to visit and/or offer advice?

  4. That is so cool. I love your hibiscus square! Also, whoever did 20 of those sushi squares leaves me awestruck (admittedly not hard when it comes to quilting).

  10. WOW! It turned out so beautiful! I'm jealous that your done too. I guess I need to get working on mine again. I'm so glad that we had our quilt group. Okinawa has meant even more to me with the friendships made making our quilt squares. I sure love and miss you all! Too bad I couldn't stay one more year so that we could all get together to finish our quilts. Oh well. Enjoy Okinawa for me.

    Lots of love from Washington...
