I made a BIG mistake. It all started three and a half years ago. I had no idea what serious and long-lasting consequences I would face. And now it's time to confess.
I fed my child cold cereal. (Gasp!)
What's the bid deal, you ask? I'll tell you the big deal. The big deal is that cold cereal is practically like candy swimming in milk. It fills up an empty belly for approximately 32 minutes and then the hunger pains begin before I've even finished cleaning up the breakfast dishes. And nothing else will ever taste as good for breakfast as cereal, especially the kind with lots of sugar or marshmellows.
I began Operation Cereal Detox last week. My alternative to cereal was good ol' fashioned oatmeal. It's quick, cheap, and healthy but not something my boys prefer to eat. After lots of tears and tantrums the boys thought I'd give up. Little do they know they have the most stubborn mother on the planet and today I won a small victory. The boys ate half their bowls of oatmeal. Yes, I had to add some extra magic potion (brown sugar) and sprinkle in a handful of raisins while allowing them to watch their favorite movie as they choked down small bites, but eat they did. Maybe by this time next week they'll be eating it without added sugar and bribes.
Maybe.
Probably not.
Oatmeal IS the healthiest breakfast. You are a good mom to encourage healthy eating habits. I must admit that I eat cold cereal for dinner sometimes! My favorites include:
ReplyDeleteGolden Grahams
Fruity Pebbles
Honey Bunches of Oats
Cookie Crisp
Oatmeal is overrated. :)
I read this post while eating a bowl of, none other than, cold cereal (yes, it's 10pm). Maybe I need OCD (operation cereal detox).
ReplyDeleteI totally need to do this with my boys. Cold cereal is a staple breakfast in our house and sometimes it makes me feel guilty. I've thought about trying oatmeal with them several times - and it obviously never happens. Maybe your post will make it really happen.
ReplyDeleteIn other news, I'm finally trying your sushi rolls tomorrow night. Wish me luck!
But cereal is so gooooood . . .
ReplyDeleteyep, we're a cold cereal family as well more for the convenience then anything else. My girls will gobble up oatmeal though if I make it. They like it mixed with applesauce. Good luck with the detox!
ReplyDeleteThe day my kids went through and entire box of cereal in one day I tossed the cold cereal too. Wesley would have Cheerios, but we even did away with those. It's oatmeal, or eggs & toast around here. On occasion I'll make pancakes. Thomas makes a mean omelet & Christina makes scrambled eggs. Anyway, we've detoxed mostly for $ reasons, but if my kids want to think it's b/c I want them to be healthy then I'm good with that too:) Good luck!
ReplyDeleteWow ... I'm an awful mother!
ReplyDeleteOccasionally I make the kids eat their oats ... they don't like it, either. Lalon and I have ours with cut up apples and cinnamon. Someone (John from boot camp) said to mix those ingredients together, bake in the oven and VOILA!! - healthy breakfast cookie to go. Would be interesting to try.
Hi guys! Isaak says HI MARCUS and thanks so much for the treats (they taste just like grapes that you make grape juice with, whose names are escaping me right now) and thanks for the ninja mask...currently Isaak's large stuffed panda is wearing it and eating things through the mouth hole. We are so glad we have friends in Japan now!
ReplyDeleteMel,
ReplyDeleteJust don't call it "mush". Randy hates that word (although you probably already knew that)!! I always liked oatmeal with brown sugar and raisins!
Hiya Melanie! Long time no see.I just found you, thanks to F.B.
ReplyDeleteI grew up on oatmeal and cream of wheat no sugar added. (I hated ever bit of it and wanted to choke)I also was deprived in every other sugar way I think possible. Have you ever heard of carob chips instead of chocolate chip? So when I got lose... I learned that koolaid truly took a whole cup of sugar! That's amazing! Good luck on the balance and CONGRATULATIONS!
i fed my kids too many healthy breakfast's, now i beg them to eat cereal and they will not touch the stuff. they strike breakfast until i make oatmeal. instant or in a pot; it doesn't matter. crazy kids!
ReplyDeletei guess i shouldn't be complaining. :)
LOL I make my kids eat oatmeal too. Not for every meal, mind you, but I can't let it go too long between oatmeal rations or then I hear complaining again! I LOOOOVE mine with brown sugar and cut up apples. Sometimes when I'm feeling crazy, I saute the apples and brown sugar in butter first. So good. That would be interesting to try that in a cookie!
ReplyDeleteOut of the blue today, my wife announces that she is going to start the kids eating oatmeal for breakfast instead of cereal. I laughed...thinking she was kidding. Oops. In my mind I though..."Poor guys. I wonder what put that into their mom's mind". Now I know.
ReplyDeleteJennah will not eat regular oatmeal. It has to be the "special oatmeal" You know the instant kind in the little packets. They have a cinnamon apple with 25% less sugar so that makes me feel better.
