Getting Creative

"You will always have a best friend because you have a brother," is a frequent reminder spoken in our house lately. Since moving to Seattle the boys have had to adjust to life without friends and some days have been harder than others. Like yesterday when Marcus wrote in his summer homework journal, "I hate Seyatle bekus I don't have any freinds." Then he sat on my lap and cried.
I feel bad for him. There are a couple neighbor kids his age but they just haven't connected yet. Not once have they invited him to play, and they run inside if they see him playing outside. I'm trying to be positive and blame their unfriendly behavior on the fact they have been born and raised here and don't know what it's like to be the new kid. For now, I'm filling in as the coolest friend ever until they make one of their own. When I have to take a break from building amazing Lego creations, playing basketball, jumping on the trampoline, or reading stories, it's nice to have a hot tub and a trampoline to keep them busy for a little while so I can get a box unpacked.
Sometimes we venture out to try something new. We went to a nearby zoo that actually had more statues of animals than actual animals. After my boys got in trouble for climbing on the statues and growling at a (non-statue) mountain lion we decided that was the first and last time we'll ever go there again. Lesson learned.
All this alone time has led to some creative ways to pass the time. Marcus has developed a talent for throwing his plastic sword through the open window on the 2nd floor while jumping on the trampoline. I have yet to accomplish the same feat. Ethan is perfecting the art of treasure hunting as he is always finding long-forgotten items in the backyard from soccer balls and old dog toys to an Easter egg filled with money.
We are definitely anxious for school to start.

  2. You are super mom, but my heart aches for Marcus and Ethan. We wish you were still here too. The replacement family arrived yesterday, but I don't have the heart to invite them over yet. No one can replace the Balls!

Have you tried meetup.com? When I moved to Pendleton I joined their meetup and met some nice people that way. At least you know the people in that group want to meet new people. Man, moving's hard....esp when you move somewhere where people aren't used to new faces. Marcus is such a great kid. Who WOULDN'T want to play with him?

  3. Ditto what Melissa said (feeling bad for the boys). Andrew misses Marcus like crazy and still talks about him.

  5. In trouble for climbing on the statues? Why are they there then?! The ones at the San Diego Zoo are there FOR climbing on. That's ridiculous.

  6. Wow, good job getting creative I'm sorry Americans stink! We can be a really cool group of people, but we can sure stink it up too. We miss you guys. Breck's birthday is coming up and he keeps saying he wants to invite Marcus and Ethan. I have to remind him that you guys moved away. Want to come back for a dinosaur party?!

  7. It does take a while to get to know people, unfortunately. But you are doing a great job keeping them busy and school makes a big difference. Love all of your pictures. You do such a great job. Love Ya, Grandparents Balls

  8. I know just how you feel. Three weeks in TX and my girls are so tired of each other. I am finally starting to connect with some other Moms in our ward but our neighborhood is desolate. It must be the heat. Susana doesn't mind so much but Jennah is sad. I too can't wait for school so she can have some friends. Good thing it is less than a month away. IN the meantime we are trying to be creative like you. It is tiring you keep them entertained all the time. Good luck!

  9. Hey Ball family,
I cannot believe how big your boys are. Zoey started Pre-K today, I guess thats how it goes though. Since we have been in Texas we have been on more outtings than we did the last time we were here. I am glad to see everyone is in good health now, sorry guys I didn't know. Hey keep up the good work, I just hope that one day I will be half as good of parents as you two.
