It had been a bad day. Two boys were getting over the stomach flu and I had been up all night with Landon as he emptied his stomach over and over again. The boys spent the day watching endless hours of television while I cleaned and disinfected the house, did countless loads of laundry, and took a much needed nap. To top it off, it was my little sister's birthday. She would be 27 years old if she were alive today. Normally I'd try to do something in honor of her but it never happened and I felt bad. Not because it would matter to her but because it's an opportunity for me to do something to be a little better, a little more like her. And it was with these thoughts that my plan unfolded.
In the morning we awoke to dark skies, heavy with rain but the weather wasn't going to stop me from doing something fun and spontaneous so when I announced that we were going to the zoo I wasn't surprised to hear shouts of excitement. I threw a couple umbrellas in the van and we were off. I smiled as I imagined ourselves being the only people crazy enough to go to the zoo in such horrible weather but as we drove closer to Seattle the clouds parted revealing beautiful blue skies. We rolled down the windows and Marcus took pictures of Seattle in the sunshine. The sun stayed out for our entire trip to the zoo and we practically had the whole place to ourselves. It was memorable, fun, and spontaneous. Just like Linz. The only thing that would've made it better was if she had been with us in person not just in spirit.
I always like doing something on my brother's birthday -- good for you (and I'm sure Linz was smiling). And I love that photo of your cool dudes.
