I am happy to report that we have finally figured out a morning routine that works. After hitting
rock bottom, I made some changes and things have been running like a well-oiled machine for a few months. I followed my friend's advice {Melissa, mother of five} and let food be the motivator to getting things done.
Now the boys get up, practice the piano, and do their other jobs before eating breakfast. If they start goofing off they won't have time for breakfast and luckily no one's had to go without eating yet. I can't even remember the last time the boys missed the bus.
I've also stepped things up a bit and only make them eat oatmeal on Monday and Wednesday. They get pancakes on Tuesday and Thursday, and Thank-Goodness-It's-Friday Breakfast Burritos. Of course every morning can't go off without a hitch but there's a lot less drama, the kids have enough time to wait for the bus at the stop, and I get the proud feeling of accomplishment as they run out the door.
The extra bonus: Ethan blows me a kiss as he runs off and always says, "I love you, Mom! I wish I could stay home forever!" Music to my ears.

Ready with enough time to put on a tie and pose for a picture. He thinks wearing a tie makes him a stud. |

I love watching them run off for the bus. So cute with their giant backpacks! |
Marcus IS totally a stud in that tie! So handsome!
ReplyDeletewell done! I also don't do cereal at my house. I might have to do the schedule. Then they know what's coming. We also throw in cream of wheat and toast and eggs. I don't think they have ever had a breakfast burrito! I must try this!!! You inspire me!
ReplyDeleteMEl, you need to do LET"S PLAY MUSIC! You would be amazing!!! I'm going into my second year teaching and it's really FUN! I love it! letsplaymusicsite.com
ReplyDeleteGood idea, practicing before breakfast!
Melanie, you totally don't need any of my advice. I can't believe you deliver a warm breakfast every morning. I'm so impressed. AND you get your kids to practice piano. You are my hero.
ReplyDeleteMelanie,
ReplyDeleteThat is the perfect motivator at our house too.
Then you don't have to use anger.
(My neighbor, who is a mom of 11 taught me the same principle)
I use the sciptures to back me up- "By the sweat of thy brow thou shalt eat thy bread all the days of thy life."
or "the idler shall not eat the bread of the laborer."
Keep up the good work- you are a darling mother.
