Grandma Balls

We are still alive!  After a wintery trip to Utah for a funeral and then a week in Hawaii followed by the stomach flu, we are here and I'm back to normal life again.

We had planned to go to Utah for a four-day weekend in January so we could attend Randy's parents mission farewell but then Randy's Grandma passed away.  Grandma Balls was 98 years old (I think) and was ready and waiting to get to the other side.  Fern was a spunky lady and so kind to all.  I love how she welcomed everyone into her large extended family.  She had five kids and when the youngest was two-years-old, her husband tragically died, leaving her a widow ever since.  She was loved by all and will be greatly missed.  She was also practical because she timed her passing to fit in while everyone was already going to be in Utah for the farewell.

Our weekend plans shifted a bit since we had to drive up to Soda Springs, Idaho for the funeral.  Luckily my dad's house was empty so we slept there after our late flight landed.  It's been a long time since we've been to my Dad's and Henry could barely remember the pirate room.

The boys got out their energy by beating each other up with Lindsey's boxing gloves and then we went to bed.  Randy and the boys went skiing while I got to visit my best friend Jen.  Major win!  We drove on snow covered roads and arrived in freezing and windy Soda where we spent the night in a hotel filled with all of Randy's cousins, aunts, and uncles.

The funeral was a beautiful tribute to Grandma with great messages and music.  The biggest surprise of all was that it only lasted an hour.  No one thought that would happen but we were sure happy.  After the luncheon we stopped at Lava Hot Springs so the boys could do something besides drive and do church things all weekend.

We did a lot of driving!  It was a weekend filled with lots of people I haven't seen in years, if ever, and lots of food, noise, and snow.  We said goodbye to Randy's parents (they will be serving at a church history site called Cove Fort.  It's in southern Utah and they will serve there for two years) then raced to the airport Monday morning with our rental car filled to the brim with suitcases and ski gear.  Poor Parker had to lay on top of the skis with his nose inches from the ceiling because there wasn't room for him anywhere else.  It was nuts.  I'm still scratching my head as to why Randy thinks skiing in Utah is worth hauling all the gear but whatever.  Maybe if I was good at skiing I would understand!
