People who have been through emotional trauma shouldn't be allowed to travel by themselves. My brain has felt disconnected to my body for several weeks now which is not a good state to be in when two small children are relying on me to get them to the other side of the planet.
Despite my handicap, there were only a couple mishaps. While standing in line to check in, I realized I didn't have my carry-on suitcase. I asked the nearest stranger if I could borrow his cell phone, practically ripped it out of his hand, and called my mom who discovered the suitcase was still at home. (My dad had loaded the luggage in the car which is why I hadn't noticed it didn't get packed). After some aggressive driving by my mom, the suitcase arrived in time. We made it to our gate being weighed down by Ethan in the stroller, Marcus on top of the carry-on (holding on for dear life), the backpack, and diaper bag. I set everything down to get out the boarding passes and discovered I didn't have them just as I heard my name being paged over the intercom. I gathered up boys, carry-on, back-pack, and diaper bag to go back to security to retrieve the missing boarding passes. We finally made it onto our plane with my nerves frazzled and my body dripping with sweat and we hadn't even left Utah. The rest of our 24-hour journey was miraculously uneventful and we're happy to be home, sort-of.
I should write a book with traveling tips for single parents. One of those tips is to use Kleenex packages to keep adult-sized headphones on children-sized heads. It worked great!
Congrats on safely arriving back in Japan after your flight. I like the headphone tip! I just flew to Texas with the girls alone and only had the headphones that stick in the ears (yep, they don't stay put). I hope you can relax a little bit now that you're back at home.
ReplyDeleteMy mom actually called me the last time you traveled by yourself and told me I could no longer complain about the 5 hour flight from Boston. You are a genius!!! I will definitely try the Kleenex trick next time we fly. Please Please write that book and send the first copy to me.
ReplyDeleteWe're glad you made it back safe and sound! To tell you the truth I was hoping your trip would have been a little bit more eventful purely for my entertainment but I'm glad it wasn't for your sake! Sweet tip about the kleenex pack!!!
ReplyDeleteMel, you're a genius with the Kleenex tip. What a stellar mommy you are. I'm so glad you got to make the trip and spend that time with your family!
ReplyDeletelots of love!
I'm so impressed that you're smiling in the pic! And I am definitely using the tissue thing! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the kleenex tip and let me just say you deserve the mother of the year award for making that trip alone. I would have jumped out of the plane at mile 2, I am sure.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I LOVE your new piano. :)
Way to go Super Mel! Sounds exhausting. glad you made it, and glad you got a piano!
ReplyDeleteYou're so inventive, I love it! LOL!
ReplyDeleteWe're glad you made it back - what a trip!
I was talking to someone the other day that said she notifies the airport ahead of time of a "handicap". So, when she gets off the plane there's a wheelchair for the kids and someone there to push them and all she has to worry about is the luggage. No proof necessary!
Next time I'm traveling alone with the kids I'll be carrying packs of kleenex and waiting for someone on the other end to help with the kids! ;) Nice thought anyway, right?
I'll have to try the kleenex trick when traveling with Derek in the mini-van. We're glad you made it back safe. When are you going to make Randy take the boys on that trip without your help?
ReplyDeleteHas it really been a month? Holy cow!
ReplyDeletethinking about you guys
We just returned from Hawaii, and it was tough with one toddler. I can't imagine with 2 and to Japan. You should write a book, I will buy it.
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing!! I have yet to go on a plane with the boys. You make it look so easy. What an amazing present Randy got you. You should write him a song with your amazing new piano. I remember some of the songs you, Noelle and Steff taught me when I moved in ;)
