World Travelers

We're back in the States again. This time I flew without Randy. It was just me and my boys. Ugh.
From this trip I have learned there are two types of people in this world:
1. People who are totally annoyed that children are even allowed on planes
2. People who see a single mom with three young children and offer help
Now I give you three stories of three different people and you can guess which category they belong in. All of these stories are true.

Story #1
This story takes place in Tokyo at the ticket counter. After waiting 30 minutes, I finally got to the front of the line to try to get our seat assignments changed since none of our seats were together.
Me: Hi. I've got a problem. I'm traveling alone with my 3 boys and our seats aren't together.
Worker: Well, let's see. I can get three of you together but I'm not sure about the fourth seat. Are you sure you want the fourth seat?
Me: We paid $1,400 for that fourth seat. I want the fourth seat! (Duh)

Story #2
While I was waiting in the 30-minute line, Marcus and Ethan were sitting at a table eating their dinner. Occasionally I would step out of line to check on them and make sure they hadn't been kidnapped.
Stranger: Hi, my name is Doug. You look like you've got your hands full.
Me: Yes, I do! ( I'm trying not to cry at this point)
Stranger/Doug: How about if I sit over by your boys while they eat. When you get to the front of the line just wave and I'll bring them over to you.
Me: Thank you so much. That would be great!
thirty minutes later....
Stranger/Doug: Here are your boys and can I just shake your hand? I've never seen boys so well-behaved. You must be doing something right!
Me: Well thanks. We do a lot of traveling and I bribe them with toys. Thanks for helping me out. I'll do my best to make sure we don't sit by you on the flight.
Stranger/Doug: Thanks!

Story #3
This story takes place in Seattle after 20 hours of travel. Landon is in the sling strapped around my waist and Marcus and Ethan are sitting on top of our huge pile of suitcases on the luggage cart. Just as I'm about to approach a self-help kiosk the following happens:
Me: Excuse me, sir. I was next in line for the kiosk.
Jerk: Oh, I didn't know. Looks like you dropped something.
I look down to see I had dropped our 4 passports on the ground. Just as I'm about to stoop and pick them up Jerk walks past me and runs over the passports with his suitcase.
Me: Thanks a lot! (jerk)

I love traveling. A lot.

  2. you are sooo BRAVE! My mom tried to convince me to fly from Utah to California and I couldn't muster the strength to even do that with the 3 kids. I insisted on just strapping them to the carseats and driving for 12 hours. I hope you enjoy your trip to the states.

  6. We miss you already :(
I'm glad you made it safe and that you had at least one "Doug" to help you along the way. Have a fabulous Christmas and enjoy being with family.

  7. So glad you made it. Hopefully, you'll have a chance to crash and re-energize.
Your boys are awesome - I'm glad someone offered a helping hand.

I may have mentioned this before - someone said they ask for assistance (wheelchair) when flying alone with kids. You're a Mom with kids (and luggage) ... more options need to be available.

Merry Christmas to you and your family. So glad you'll all be together.

  8. Thank goodness for the the Doug's of the world. Coming home from my last flight alone with three children the nicest lady and her husband helped me off the plane all the way to luggage. Collected all my luggage paid for a cart, hauled my luggage outside and then loaded it into my ride's vehicle without me ever asking for help. They were true angels.

  9. I'm glad you made it safely. I will always remember what it is like to travel with kids alone and I promise to you I will always be a Doug to others!

BTW, when you fly back you can get a pass for your dad or sibling to help you to the gate. The person has to leave their Driver's License at the check-in counter in order to get a security pass. Guess that's why they check our tickets again at boarding!

Miss you and I'm praying for all of you!
