What's Up with My Kids and Their Love for Shoes?

 Landon got new shoes on Saturday.  He was so excited he only took them off for church and bed time.  Monday morning he came into my room, giddy as could be sporting his new shoes, asking for breakfast.  I looked at the clock.  It was 4am!  He must've been up for awhile because the kitchen lights were on downstairs and he had already helped himself to a snack from the pantry.  I was furious!  And tired.  I picked him up and hauled him back to bed despite his kicking and screaming.  I removed his shoes and told him if he didn't go back to bed he wouldn't get to wear his shoes the next day.  About fifteen minutes later, just as I was drifting back to sleep, I heard him walking back downstairs with his shoes on.  He saw me coming after him and started running.  After chasing the little stinker down, I ripped off his shoes, set them on top of a shelf he couldn't climb to, and hauled him back upstairs to bed.  I think he finally fell asleep for a couple more hours.  I was not so lucky.  After getting my heart rate pumping from the chase and climb up the stairs, it took me an hour to fall asleep.  Minutes later Randy had to get up for work so sleep was no longer an option.  Mornings like that make me wish I could trade jobs with Randy.  In fact, even a root canal sounds better!
But I must admit it gave me great pleasure in not allowing Landon to wear his shoes to school.  He was devastated and tried every trick in the book to get me to cave.  I didn't.
Last night as he was praying at dinner he said, "Please help me to sleep all night long."  I think he learned his lesson.
And I learned mine.  Next year my kids are getting one present for Christmas and it will be a pair of shoes.  That's it.  Nothing else.  Pretty sure they'll think it's the best Christmas so far. {Exhibit A, and Exhibit B}

  1. You can't be too hard on him. Those are some pretty awesome shoes, especially because they're orange. :) Sam called them basketball shoes.
